He worked there until the Christmas of 1873 when he went back to Germany. This was a very stormy voyage and he nearly lost his life, but he eventually got back to his home.
In February he with his sweetheart and brother August came back to America. This was the year of 1874 and a very important year because on April 14, 1874 when he was married to Wilhelmina Augusta ROHDE at Mazomanie, Wisconsin. Later he received word from Germany that his parents Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. KUMM and Mr. and Mrs. Carl ROHDE (parents of Mrs. C. F. KUMM) were planning to come to America to make their home. They wanted Mr. C. F. KUMM to find a farm home for the KUMM family.
The country surrounding Mazomanie was not what he wanted, so in 1875 he went on a trip to the west. His first stop was at Lime Springs, Iowa. From there he went to Preston, Minnesota, then back to Lime Springs, Iowa. He then took the stage to Spring Valley, Minnesota and found just the kind of a farm he wanted for his parents. He liked Spring Valley so well that he bought the wagon shop in December, 1875.
January 26, 1876, he moved his family from Mazomanie, Wisconsin to Spring Valley, Minnesota. His brother Edward worked at the blacksmith trade in connection with the wagon shop, in Spring Valley, Minnesota.
