Ernst Walter STEINHAUS
Walter was the youngest child of Antonette & Fritz Steinhaus, being only five months old when his father died in 1885. He was born and lived at the family roadside hostelry and tavern in Mosel Township until 1894 when he moved witht he family to Sheboygan. After grade and high school he entered the University of Wisconsin in Madison WI. In September 1908 he took up a homestead near Cooper SD. Then he operated several farms in WI and IL. In 1938 he became the Superintendent of Melody Estate near Lake Forest IL. He ws the president of the North Shore Horticulture Society for two years. In 1958 he retired to Santa Fe NM where he pursued his hobbies of gardening and wood carving. He died in an automobile accident returning from his son's home in Los Alamos to his home in Santa Fe, NM.
